Teaching Standards

Standard VIII. Professional Development

I relize that I do not teach in a vacuum. Both the field of mathematics and the teaching profession undergo changes. There are new topics and techniques that emerge and it is important to keep up to date with those new developments.

By participating in professional conferences and continuing to read current research with an open mind I will ensure that I continue to grow as a teacher.

Staying informed and reflective about my teaching practice will allow me to continue to improve my effectiveness as an instructor and eventually will allow me to make positive contributions to my field.

Teaching Philosophy

  • Just recently - on May 5th, 2008 I attended the Cayuga-Onondaga Professional Development Conference for middle school teachers. This meeting was a day long workshop during which we looked at the 2008 New York State Mathematics Tests for grades 5-8. In grade teams we shared successful lessons and critiqued each other's lessons in progress. We also designed a lesson to meet our selected learning objectives.

  • It is important for me to be part of the largest national professional organization for mathematics teachers. I am a proud member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

NCTM's publications keep me informed about current policies, as well as workshops and conferences that take place in my field. It also provides me with resources containing the most current recommended instructional strategies for teaching various mathematical topics.

  • As a mathematician it is also necessary for me to be part of the major organizations for professionals in my content area. It would be unfair to teach mathematics if I were unaware of the new discoveries and developments in my discipline as well as those that connect it to other applied sciences. So I am a member of the professional organizations I listed above.
